На основе анализа научных публикаций по теме исследования в рецензируемых научных изданиях, осуществлённого с использованием общенаучных методов анализа, синтеза, структурирования и группировки информации, в работе показано, что мировой опыт организации медицинской реабилитации характеризуется некоторыми общими решениями: разнообразием учреждений восстановительного лечения, позволяющим оказывать реабилитационную помощь в нужном объёме и максимально близко к месту жительства пациента; широким распространением реабилитации на дому и на уровне общины; большим вниманием к окупаемости реабилитационных мероприятий и выделением профессиональной реабилитации в качестве ведущего направления. В то же время в России современное состояние системы медицинской реабилитации является следствием длительного стихийного развития в отсутствие единой теоретической, нормативной и организационной основы.
