В статье представлен аналитический обзор ведущих направлений развития медицинского добровольческого движения в различные периоды российской истории. На всех ступенях своего развития добровольческая деятельность была неразрывно связана с благотворительностью. Степень добровольческой активности во многом определялась внешними или внутренними угрозами (эпидемии, войны), вызывающими объединение всего общества.
